Re - Topsy Nelson and Arthur Nelson.
Interviewed Mr Nelson. He states he registered the birth of Topsy at
Roper Valley Station towards the end of August 1946. He gave the
father's name as unknown.
Arthur was born at Bagot Road Hospital so Mr Nelson assumed she was
registered.
Topsy's name, since her arrival at Garden Point, is Hilda.
The deceased Mrs Nelson's child Topsy, as already mentioned a full
blood aboriginal, was the oldest of her children. Mr Nelson, a
European, was married to Mrs Nelson, a full blood aboriginal, in May 1946.
He is the father of Arthur, and also of Margaret, who was born at Coolibah
Station on 26. 2.1950.
Since his wife's death, Mr Nelson has done a remarkably good job in caring
for his own two halfcaste children and for the full blood aboriginal child
Topsy.
He informs me that he is now paying 27/6 per week for each of the three
children, to the Garden Point Mission. He does not wish the children to be
committed to this Institution, and he has made a request to me that the
child Topsy (or Hilda as I believe she is now known) to be exempted from
the Aboriginal Ordinance.
It is inspiring and somewhat pathetic to realise the position in which
Mr Nelson now finds himself. He has the reputation of being a first class
stockman and his character generally is held in high respect. He is aware
that if his plans eventuate to further the education of the three children
in the South, his present expenditure of over 200 pounds a year, will
br greatly increased. He is doing the best to save money for this purpose.

I have not been able to obtain from the Manager of Limbunya
Station any additional information to that on the attached
'Form of Information of Birth' concerning the birth of
aboriginal Dick at Limbunya on 30. 4.1956.
My information is that the father Bulla and his consort
Daisy are, due to their lack of English words, hard to
question. The parents have not been long at Limbunya Station
and little is known of them there.

9.10.1956 From Welfare Branch Borroloola to Director of Welfare
Attached is Registration of Birth form of a female child born to
Aboriginal Emmalina at Borroloola on 6.10.1956.
Following the birth the child appeared very light in colour, more
so than the normal lightness associated with the birth of a full
blood infant. I queried the mother, Emmalina, and was advised
that the father was Lenin Anderson, a half caste son on
Andy Anderson of Manangorah. Emmalina has had three children
previously, two halfcastes and one full blood and her associations
are siomewhat loose.

They are not married she is a single woman and Clarke is a

years.
We do let him have his meals in the kitchen but otherwise he is

Re: Roy and Doris - Halfcaste children of Daisy Oraria
I have received a form of information of birth of a child Clara
apparently the issue of one Paddy Killimerrie, Police tracker,
Timber Creek, aged 50 years and Daisy Oraria aged 22 years. On
the form of information, the previous issue are shown as Roy
aged 6 years and Doris aged 2 1/2 years.
I referred the original form back to Paddy as it was not marked
by him but only by the mother and also querying the parentage
in so far as Paddy is concerned of Roy and Doris. Constable
Conaghan of Timber Creek furnished a second form marked by Paddy
but on it showed Roy and Doris as halfcastes. In the covering
memorandum he states that Paddy is not the father of these two
children who are halfcastes but that the two children were born
since Daisy and Paddy commenced living together as man and wife
and apparently Paddy has accepted responsibility for them.
Searching back through my records I find that I have a registration
of a Doris born on 27. 9.1954, the issue of Paddy Nhungali,
stockman, 39 years of age and Daisy Nmamijina aged 20 years.
Previous issue of this union was shown as Roy aged 4 years and
Mindawuk age not shown. Although in each case, the father appears
to be a man anmed Paddy, it is possible that they may be two
different men. Could you enlighten me on this point, and have
you a record of a Mindawuk being born of this union of either
of them.
What is causing me more concern however is the statement that both
Roy and Doris are halfcaste and not the children of Paddy whether
Nhungali or Killimerrie. If they are not his children, but
obviously the children of a white man, I cannot register them as
Paddy's children even though he accepts them as his. Can you give
me any assistance from your records. If they are halfcastes then
to register them as children of full bloods may imperil their
freedom at a later age.
At present, I have no registration of Roy but if matters can be
straightened out, I may be able to register him also.
22. 8.1957 From Welfare Branch to Registrar General.
Re: Roy and Doris - part coloured children of Daisy Oraria (Nguria)
Investigation of our records has disclosed the following information:-
The mother of the children has the European name of Daisy,
Aboriginal name Nguria and is a member of the Nambidjina
Group of the Mudbura tribe. Daisy was born on Monteginnie
Station in 1934 and tribally married to Paddy Kilirrmirri
on Monteginnie in 1946.
The consort of Daisy, Paddy Lolirrmiri of the Jangari Group
of the Jamindjun tribe was born at Timber Creek in 1906 and
has for a number of years been employed as a Police Tracker
at Timber Creek.
Information obtained during the census discloses that Roy
(aboriginal name Bandugani) was born to Daisy at Moolooloo
Station in 1951 and that the alleged father was a European
named Ron, employed as a cook.
In 1953, at Victoria River Downs another child, Doris (aboriginal
name Jigura) was born to Daisy and the alleged father was a
European named Ted, employed as a stockman.
Both of these children have been accepted by Paddy who is shown
in our records as the Foster Father.
Being part-coloured children neither Ray nor Doris have been
included in the Register of Wards and for the purpose of
Registration of Births they should be treated as non wards.
