26. 9.1960 From DSS Adelaide to Welfare Darwin
Can female wards who have been tribally married and have been deserted by
their husbands have any redress in law. Can a deserted native wife whose
husband is employed at a reasonable wage enforce a claim for the maintenance
of the children and herself against him.
A case in point is that of Gertrude Huddleston of Roper River Mission, a
widow's pension claimant.
21. 1.1961 From DSS Adelaide to Welfare Darwin
Gertrude Huddleston's deserting husband is William Huddleston.

24. 3.1961 From Welfare Darwin to DSS Adelaide
Widow's Pension Claim - Gertrude Huddleston
(a) Gertrude has been living at Roper River Mission with her children since 1954
except for occasional short periods when she has visited relatives on neighbouring
property.
(b) Until recently she lived with her aged mother but has now moved to a separate room
in order to escape the influence of her mother and other relatives.
(c) About 3 years ago she did keep company with another person but herself terminated
the relationship on the grounds that she was anxious to resume her relationship with
William Huddleston and to retain his affection.
(d) Huddleston has not been near the Mission for 6 years and his whereabouts are not
known to the Mission or Gertrude.
(e) Despite this Gertrude is anxious for the marriage to be resumed and has not encouraged
other suitors because of this .
(f) She is finding life a little too much for her trying to manage her home and family alone.
(g) The Superintendent of the Mission has stated that oddly enough Gertrude happens to be
one of those 'rarities' who is a genuine 'deserted wife'.
