Milleewa Half-caste home - Mulgoa, NSW

National Archives of Australia Canberra Office Series A885 Item B400 Institution - 'Milleewa' half caste home - Mulgoa, NSW Copyright P J Mackett 2005 Commonwealth of Australia Child Endowment Office Ninth Floor, CML Building 41-49 King William Street Adelaide 9th September 1942 The Deputy Commissioner of Child Endowment Sydney 'Milleewa', Brunswick Parade, Ashfield 'The Rectory', Mulgoa Replying to your Memorandum dated 29th August, I return herewith the pro forma claims forwarded by you with an endorsment showing the position in each case. In connection with the claim from the Half-Caste Home at Ashfield, those children showing a date of last payment in South Australia are from the Roper River Mission, and form portion of two parties which were evacuated to Sydney. Payment was made to the date of evacuation. No surnames were shown on the Roper River Mission claim, but the christian names and dates of birth agree with the records in this office. As regards the children from the Groote Eylandt Mission, the position is as follows. The Secretary, Rev John Wm Ferrier, of 109a Bathurst Street, Sydney, has lodged a claim for endowment showing only the native names of the children. It is possible that for official convenience in evacuation, some of these children may have been given European names, and there is no means of ascertaining in this State whether they are the same children as shown in your claim. No payment has been made to the Mission, however, and advice is awaited from the Secretary as to the reason why no claim for pay- ment has been made. Enclosed is a list of the native names of the children from Groote Eylandt. If it is found from the Secretary that any of them are identical with those claimed for in your State, will you kindly advise me of the fact and state the date from which payment commenced in New South Wales in order that an overlapping of payments may be avoided in the event of a Form CE55 received from the Mission. Claims from two of the mothers mentioned have been received in this office, but neither has been granted, pending receipt of further instructions regarding payments to aboriginals; the papers of Margaret Hall were forwarded to your office on 11th August, 1942, and those of Dorcas Wesley are being forwarded under separate cover. As regards the claim from the Half-Caste Institution at Mulgoa, there is a claim in this office from Ruby Williams (nee Madden) of Alice Springs, but Minnie is not included thereon, being shown as an inmate of the Half-Caste Institution at Alice Springs. Alice Mills of Darwin lodged a claim for endowment which was returned to her on 8th October, 1941, for completion, but it has not been sent back to this office. There is no record of the other persons shown on this claim.
