Narional Archives of Australia Darwin Office CRS F315/0 Item 1949/393A Part 3 Patrol Officers Reports - All Patrol Officers 1949 Aboriginals (Pastoral Industry) Regulations Daly River Farms and Fish Camp 1950 Copyright P J Mackett, 2006 Aboriginals (Pastoral Industry) Regulations Daly River Farms and Fish Camp 1950 DALY RIVER FARMS and FISH CAMP Harvesting was in progress on all farms except Mr R Judge's farm. Mr Judge had only 3 acres of peanuts in and had completed his harvest and forwarded his peanuts to Darwin; 1/1 1/4 per lb is paid to the farmers on the farm, ie 3.6.0 per bag of 60 lbs. The working periods on the farm are - November - January - seeding and weeding April - July - harvesting, etc Most of the farmers keep their employees and their dependants all the year. The Daly River is a good native food area with plenty of permanent waters. For rationing of the natives beef is obtained at irregular intervals from Elizabeth Downs; wallaby, geese and fish are used to supplement beef rations. During harvesting workers and dependants eat their fill of peanuts. A list of natives on the peanut farms, fish camp and Police Station is attached to this report. Mr R Judge's Farm This is situated three miles up the river from the Police Station on the east side of the river. Aboriginal employment Licence No 2800 Mr Judge had only one native employed. Ridsdale Bros' Farm The farm is situated half a mile below the Police Station on the east side of the river. Aboriginal employment Licences 3229 and 3230. Ridsdale Bros work two peanut farms and also hold a tobacco manufacturing licence. Mr Ridsdale has for two years imported cured leaf from other States for manufacture owing to a disease on his farm but expects to commence growing irrigated tobacco next dry season. Rodsdales also run a store, stocking items used by whites and natives. Nine men, 13 women and 6 children were living on his farm. Mr Ridsdale pays his regular male employees 10/- per week during harvesting in addition to food, clothes and tobacco. They are paid at the end of harvest. He maintains all of his natives throughout the year. Mr Alexander's Farm Situated 7 miles by road below the Police Station and crossing on the east side of the river. This is MR Alexander's first crop on the Daly River. He is at present working with G W Taylor. He will obtain an employmeny licence in July. Mr Alexander pays his employees 5/- per week in addition to food and clothing. Mr Dargie's Farm Situated half a mile below Alexander's farm on the east side of the river. Aboriginal employment Licence No 2793. Nine men, 5 women and 8 children were living on his farm. Dargie employs 4 men and pays 10/- per week wages during thrashing in addition to food and clothing. Dargie has 2 half-caste children (aboriginal mother is Micky Midjamara, Brinkin) :- Mable Dargie born 14th February, 1943 Neil Dargie born 4th May, 1946 Mable is in Darwin with Dargie's mother and attends the Public School. Neil is with his father and will go to school when he is old enough. I made out Child Endowment form for one family of 5 children on his farm and his Employment Return. Rose Nangalaga Nau-Ula, Brinkin, full sister to Maggie Molan, deceased, is on Dargie's farm. She is living with a native named Matthew Muduri who is employed on the farm. Parry Bros' Farm Hill Crest Farm, situated 3 miles above the crossing on the west bank, is the home of Bill Parry. Parry Bros' Employmeny Licence No 2797. Taylor informed me that Constable Davis had taken his employment licence to the Police Station and had not returned it. Constable Fitzer could not locate the Licence. The licence was issued in Darwin. Six men, 6 women and 5 children live on the farm. Taylor pays his workers off after each working period with rations and clothing; he does not pay any money unless the natives are going to Darwin. The natives are maintained all the year. Michael Harkin's Farm Situated half a mile below Taylor's Farm on the west bank, ie about 11 miles by road below the crossing. Aboriginal Employment Licence No 2794. Harkins had only one native on the farm but 3 men, 5 women and 4 children were away with Harkins truck after crocodile skins. Two part-aboriginal children are with their mother and her aboriginal husband who move about among the farms. It was with some difficulty that I was able to contact them. It is reported that they go into the bush when any truck approaches. When I made enquiries at first it was without result but later I was able to see them on the promise that I would not take the children away. They came into Harkins camp. The family are :- Luny Man-gi, Moiul, male, 50 Jari-miri, Moiul, female, 25 Ada Anderson (Half-caste), born 1. 7.1943 Daly River, father European Harold Adja (Half-caste), born 1. 5.1946 Daly River, father European. Mr L Howell is in partnership with Mr Vegar. Aboriginal Employment Licence No 3233. There is a landing ground one mile from the fish camp; this is the only landing ground on the Daly River Settlements. Mr Vegar's refrigerator was out of action and he was awaiting parts to effecr repairs. His natives were employed on road making. Mr Vegar has a 20ft boat on the river. Fish is sent to Darwin by truck when the refrigerator is working. Fifteen men, 8 women and 9 children are in the camp. Mr Vegar pays 10/- per week to 10 male employees. Payment is made monthly in addition to clothes and rations. Beef is obtained as he is able; wallaby, geese and fish assist for a meat diet. The natives on the fish camp were contented and had no desire to leave the district. Mr Vegar is a good employer. I made out Child Endowment forms for 3 native families on his camp and made out his Employment Return. A summary of the census of aborigines in the Daly River District is attached to this report. 20. 7.1950 G Sweeney Patrol Officer Daly River Farms, Fish Camp and Police Station Police Station European Name Aboriginal Name Tribe Age Sex Employment Remarks Andy Balwani Nangiomiri 35 M Mary Gan-yi 30 F Wife Barney Wada-wari Nangiomiri 50 M Pensioner Minnie Nangirin 30 F Wife Frank Majindi Moiul 66 M Pensioner Father of Nellie Wombonji Joe Ada-wamba Nangiomiri 45 M Tracker Nellie Wombonji 25 F Jinnie Wanjirr Moiul 60 F Pensioner Mother of Rodger Ging-arngu Daisy Bell A-du-du Moiul 16 F Housegirl Single Miriam Nan-mu-in Nangiomiri 65 F Pensioner Nym Majindi Nangiomiri 65 M Pensioner Polly I Nau-ula Nangiomiri 60 F Pensioner Wife Clara Gurug Nangiomiri 40 F Wife Polly II Ngaya Moiul 50 F Pensioner Wife Polly Al-wiru Moiul 60 F Pensioner Polly Dal-gu-mu Moiul 65 F Pensioner Paddy Du-ban Nangiomiri 55 M Tracker Judy Galambi Moiul 20 F Hector Namin-ji-ing 6 M Minnie Ja-la-luk 4 F Redlily Dam-bul Moiul 65 F Pensioner Tommy Jamai Nangiomiri 60 M Pensioner Minnie Mulwandi 55 F Pensioner Whiskey Mirin Nangiomiri 28 M Tracker Single, partly blind Johnnie Bil-wari Wagaman 30 M Tracker On Holiday Kitty Wiliria Wagaman 40 F Wife Fish Camp - T Vegar European Name Aboriginal Name Tribe Age Sex Employment Remarks Barney Jang-a-li(t) Malak Malak 45 M On holiday from Adelaide River Bessie Nin-bim-ing Malak Malak 70 F Pensioner Billy McCam Junang 14 M Son of Nym and Jessie, Dargie's farm Charlie Saccra Wal-na-jag Malak Malak 50 M Nancy Ba-lan 30 F Wife Michael Gun-bug 8 M Born 1.10.1942 Helen Larr-gin-gin 3 F Born 1. 8.1947 Norbed Jana-galaij 1 M Born 1. 8.1949 Fred Ma-ri-rig Malak Malak 35 M Maudie Larrb-jag 50 F Wife Harry Bud-budj Malak Malak 40 M Kitty Gam-ba Wagaman 30 F Wife Harry Barr-mig Malak Malak 20 M Single Jimmy Larr-miri Malak Malak 70 M Pensioner Blind Jimmy Da-mu-ru-rug Malak Malak 55 M Pensioner Johnnie Gu-rur Malak Malak 25 M Dora Manggara Malak Malak 25 F Wife Adelaide Ga-reilwa 7 F Daughter Elizabeth Bu-lin 5 F Daughter Bruce Jigait 3 M Son Jimmy Gurrwag Malak Malak 20 M Norah Jirr-gu-rug Malak Malak 16 F Father is Long Johnnie Long Johnnie Bam-bain Malak Malak 40 M Wife died 1949 Young Johnnie Mu-bun-dug Malak Malak 14 M Bill Yates Dun-bar 12 M Edwin Bu-ral 7 M Jack Mar-wi-rid 5 M Madju Mal-bi-yirig Malak Malak 70 M Pensioner Menzies Bariab Malak Malak 50 M Wife dead, son is Johnnie Gurur Micky Dara-wag Malak Malak 70 M Pensioner Minnie Daboi 55 F Pensioner Wife Nugget Kitj (Keesh) Malak Malak 40 M Judy Na-murrg Malak Malak 40 F Wife Bob Judge's Farm European Name Aboriginal Name Tribe Age Sex Employment Remarks Nym Mirin Wagaman 60 M Pensioner Nancy Wudie Moiul 35 F Wife Patsy Mara-buda 7 F Daughter Gypsy Wulei-a Moiul 25 F Wife Big Foot Paddy Bulwani 60 M Pensioner Agnes Namuk 8 F Daughter Robin Gilbid 6 M Son Ridsdale's Farm European Name Aboriginal Name Tribe Age Sex Employment Remarks Albert Darr-gu Brinkin 20 M Nellie Gamatji Brinkin 40 F Wife Barney Dugu-ana Nangiomiri 28 M Mable (Mabel) Gan-in-dalng-u 30 F Wife Blind Nipper Gulmunggu Nangiomiri 40 M Pensioner Blind Captain (Afghan) Manggalang Brinkin 60 M Pensioner Harry Bal-wani Brinkin 30 M Rosie Ngal-i-mu Brinkin 20 F Jinnie Yam-bi-in Brinkin 50 F Pensioner Albert Darrgu's mother Kangaroo Gun-bug Nangiomiri 60 M Pensioner Maudie Ngan-moi Nangiomiri 50 F Pensioner Husband Big Foot Paddy Peter Guna-warid Moiul 50 M Wife dead; impediment speech Peter Na-bain 8 M Son Robert Ra-bidj Nangiomiri 15 M Orphan Rodger Ging-arngu Nangiomiri 28 M Ruby Gan-yi 40 F Cook Wife (Ruby is the mother of Barbara and Nellie Cummings, part-aborigines.)
