Movement of Western Desert Aborigines (Pintubi) into Papunya

National Archives of Australia F1 1972/6160 Movement of Western Desert Aborigines (Pintubi) into Papunya 19. 8.1964 From L N Penhall Southern Division to J Long Darwin Questions by Mr D D Smith Attached are two reports, one from Yuendumu and one from Papunya, concerning questions asked in the Legislative Council. These reports answer the specific questions, but in addition I supply the following information concerning six deaths that have occurred among the Pintubis who were brought into Papunya by Mr Long. This list has already been phoned through to Darwin. However, I have some additional comments to make which may be of interest to you. Lupira - female aged 26 years, died at papunya of malnutrition on 22. 5.1964 Lupira was the first death amongst these people and she was an inmate of Papunya Hospital where she received specialised nursing, but failed to respond to treatment. Tjingapa - next death after lupira, female aged 40 years, died at Papunya of malnutrition on 2. 7.1964. Tjingapa had also been an inmate of Papunya Hospital and had been reported to the medical authorities in Alice Springs. However, she died before she could be evacuated. Yakitjara - female aged 18 years, died in Alice Springs Hospital of malnutrition and pneumonia. She had also received specialised nursing and was brought to the hospital three times a day for meals prior to her beingevacuated to Alice Springs Hospital. She was also subject to a recheck following the recent TB survey. She also received specialised nursing in the Alice Springs Hospital, but failed to respond to treatment. Yinarki - male aged 4 years, died in Alice Springs Hospital of pneumonia and dysentry. He died on 15. 7.1964 following evacuation to the Alice Springs Hospital on 6. 7.1964, and then being placed in the Receiving Home Alice Springs, for a short period before being readmitted to the hospital where he died. Namutja - died on 9. 7.1964. He was male, 65 years plus, and he died at Papunya of malnutrition. He was transported to the hospital for three meals a day and was eating fairly well under supervision. However, despite this supervised feeding his condition still deteriorated until he eventually died. Nyuga - the last death was female, 44 years, died in the Alice Springs Hospital on 8. 8.1964 of pneumonia and heart failure. She had received three months of specialised nursing and her medical history at the Alice Springs Hospital shows that every endeavour was made by the Doctors to save her life. However, she failed to respond to treatment and eventually died. There has been one other death, that of a child named Peter, who lived for 20 hours. He died on 26. 7.1964 at Papunya, but he was a premature birth and weighed under 2 pounds. Both Dr Langford and Dr Dawes informed me that his liklehood of survival even in the best hospital in Australia would have been nil. I feel that his death should not be taken into consideration of the overall picture of those who have died, as he was born well after they had been brought into Papunya Settlement and if he had been born in the bush he probably would not have survived the twenty hours that he did at Papunya Settlement. There is one of these people now in Hospital who was brought in for surgery and she is progressing satisfactorily. The remainder of the people at the present time are showing signs of improvement. At Papunya every individual is checked daily at the Hospital, their meals are supervised, and Mrs Jenkins is supervising the feeding of the children in the Papunya Hospital. In a discussion with Dr Langsford and Dr Dawes they feel that the people who died would have died anyway, plus a number of others. They are satisfied that everything has been done both by the medical authorities and the Welfare Branch to see that these people have received every consideration and treatment that is available in Alice Springs, and despite the hard work of the Doctors they could not have saved the lives of those who have died. These people will be kept under close observation and you will be notified of any incidents that occur. Mr Lovegrove is at Papunya this week and I will be visiting it again next week on approximately the 24th, when a further report on their present condition will be submitted.
